A fire extinguisher is one of the most important safety devices that you can have around the house. And picking one is an easy thing to do. The most common type of extinguisher used in the home has an "A-B-C" rating (see photo).

The "A" rating means the extinguisher works on fires involving wood and paper products. The "B" rating indicates an extinguisher is effective on fires involving petroleum products such as gasoline as well as solvents and grease. And remember, never try to douse a grease fire with water. You'll only make it mad.

A fire extinguisher with a "C" rating can also be used on electrical fires, such as appliance or power tool fires. The extinguisher sprays a dry powder that blankets the burning material, preventing it from re-igniting. It's messy, but very effective.

Always keep a fully-charged fire extinguisher handy, but remember; if fire breaks out in your home, do not put yourself in jeopardy trying to fight it. Call the fire department and get to safety.
