Lead Pipes

House Detective : Episode HDT-111 -- More Projects »
If you had lead water pipes, you should know that if lead begins to leach into the water, it can be a real health hazard--but one that can be avoided with the right precautions. So how do you know if you have lead in your home's water system?

Sources of lead in drinking water include lead water supply lines, brass faucets or fittings that contain lead, and copper pipes soldered with material containing lead.

If you suspect that your home has any of these conditions, you should:

1. Reduce your exposure to lead by running cold water for two to three minutes before using it.

2. Don't use hot tap water for cooking.

3. Investigate filters and water treatments that are commercially available.

Remember, lead is a toxic heavy metal that should not be taken lightly. If you think that you might have a problem, call your local water utility or health department to have your water tested immediately.
