Charles Carroll's Homewood

This Palladian-inspired home in Baltimore was considered the most expensive wedding present of its day. Charles Carroll, one of the founders of Maryland and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, ordered the construction of Homewood in 1801. It was a wedding present for his son. But the younger Carroll spent $40,000 on the home, about four times what his father intended. The senior Carroll reluctantly paid the bill and the couple lived happily and raised a family. In 1916, the house was given to Johns Hopkins University. The school has restored Homewood and is now a museum.
