Serene Abode

The Saunders’ family home in Wakefield, Mass., was built as a chapel and later turned into a small library. They purchased the home in 1996 because it suited the family’s eclectic taste.

Marcy and Mike Saunders, along with their children, love the historic atmosphere the 1880 building projects. The building retains the feel of a church and the original library letters are still visible in the front hall. But it took a lot of work to create the serene space. March likes to call it their "forever house" as the renovations never seem to end. They keep to a budget that allows for one or two projects a year. After nearly eight years the home is complete.

The furnishings tend to be more modern, not in the era of the original structure. This was done with the goal of making the house feel very livable. There are some quirks about the place, such as the nearly hidden stairs to the second floor.
