We live in a brave new world, where high-tech electronics combine with home entertainment and security into one household system. Pat and Jodi show how to turn your house into a high-tech smart home. They start by showing how to install security cameras.
Plan the Installation
- We surveyed the home's landscape to determine the optimum placement for the video cameras. To be able to adequately view the entrance and driveway leading to the home , we decided to place one camera on the rear corner of the house. This camera should be able to monitor any movement from the driveway to the street.
- Next, we checked the backyard, as the homeowner wants to monitor the outdoor play area. We marked the left rear corner of the house and the back door for two camera placements.
- Finally, to monitor the front door, we marked an area on the side wall near the front door to mount the final video camera.
Identify Locations for Cameras
- We began testing the possible placements for the camera. Up on a ladder, we examined the position near the front entrance of the house.
- We ran the cable into the house and into the living room for the VCR hookup.
- We connected the cable to the VCR and then were able to check the range and angle of the camera from the various test positions.
- Next, we tested the camera near the garage, again running the cable to the VCR and checking the camera positions and angles.
- After the best camera mounting positions were selected, we marked each location to mount the cameras.
Test Mounts
- At the marked locations outside the house, we drilled holes to lead the cable into the attic.
- Then from the outside, we pushed the cable through the hole to the inside of the attic. There was enough room in the attic to work easily as we pulled the cable through .
- Back outside, we attached the camera housing bracket to the house using the screws provided.
- Next, we plugged the cable into the camera and then inserted the camera into the housing bracket.
- We securely mounted the camera with the supplied screws.
Mount Cameras
- Standing on ladders, we began working near the garage doors. To mount the camera , we unscrewed the cover off of the camera and then attached a clip to the camera using the supplied screws.
- Next, we joined the camera housing to the clip and then attached the camera to the housing with the screws provided.
- We then checked to be sure the camera was repositioned properly.
- We repeated the procedure at the other camera positions.
Run Cables
- We started running our cables from the basement, pushing our fish tape through the ceiling to where we had brought down the cables from the cameras.
- In the living room, we taped the ends of the camera cable to the fish tape and pulled it back through the ceiling to adjust the cable where needed.
- Next, we drilled access holes into the back of the entertainment cabinet where the cables would run.
- We pushed the cables up through the holes and into position.
- We completed the cable runs on all of the wired cameras, leading the cables to the back of the entertainment center.
Connect to VCR
- Our last step in setting up the video surveillance system was to connect the cables to the VCR. First, we pulled the cables up through a set of holes located near the VCR.
- We then attached the cables to the controller box, making sure we had the correct camera cable in the correct connector.
- We made a visual test of all of the cameras and the switch box. We also made sure that the motion sensor on the cameras was working correctly.
- Finally, we fine-tuned the camera angles to be sure every camera was working properly and had the best view possible.
