Our homeowners near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, had a very pungent problem brewing in their basement. The sewer line sprung a leak. But, because it was caught early, and the injury was minor, it won't require a major procedure to fix the fractured pipe.In general, if a pipe has a small pinhole or hairline crack, it can be patched easily. Patching kits, putties and epoxies are available at your local hardware store. If you find a leak, it's important to act quickly.
- Turn off the water supply to the leaking pipe. It's probably a good idea to cut off the water to the entire house at the main water cut off valve.
- Patch the leak with the proper patching kit for the type of pipe.
- Call a licensed plumber. Patch kits only provide a temporary fix.
A good rule of thumb is to treat a crack or hole in a pipe like a wound. Apply first aid, stabilize it and call the doctor, or in this case a plumber, to check it out.
