House Detective : Episode HDT-103 -- More Projects »
In the Inspector's Notebook, inspector Tim Hockenberry takes a closer look at one of the problems found in the home inspection.

In Baltimore, Maryland, the house detective found that the main water shut off valve didn't shut off. This creates huge problems when its time for plumbing repairs . Do you know how to FIND the water shut off valve in your house? The easiest way is to track back from the cold water pipe on your water heater.

There are several different types of valves. The ball valve is the most popular and takes a quarter turn to shut off. The gate valve can require 10 or 15 turns to close. Both do the same job, so why not make it easy on yourself?

To reduce problems with the shut off valve, keep it limber by giving it a periodic twist. If you suspect problems, call a professional plumber. And, at least two people in the house should know where the valve is located and how to turn the water off .

But don't wait for an emergency situation. Find that valve and make sure its working properly.
