Low Water Pressure Fixes

House Detective : Episode HDT-204 -- More Projects »
Low water pressure can occur for a variety of reasons. If the water in your house comes from a city system, then restrictions in the main line from corrosion or debris could be causing the problem. If your water comes from a well, low pressure could mean the storage tank needs repair or the well pump might be undersized.

But before you do anything expensive to increase the water pressure, try these simple fixes first.

  • Make sure the main valve in your house and at the street main are fully open.
  • If that doesn't raise your water pressure, have a plumber check for corrosion, or debris at the main valves and meters.
  • If pressure is still a problem, consider installing low-flow shower heads and aerators in all the faucets.
  • And if all that's still not enough, pressure-boosting pump systems are also available. But watch out--these can cost from $500 to $600. So start cheap and easy. You'll keep your blood pressure down and maybe get your water pressure up.
