Non-Stop Faucet Repair

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-221 -- More Projects »
Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to repair a bathroom sink faucet that doesn't seem to have an "off" position. The knob will turn and the water goes off, but it keeps turning and the water comes back on. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Tools:

Phillip's head and flat head screwdrivers
pliers
stem assembly
knobs

Steps:

1. Turn off water under the sink and use a screwdriver to pop the cap off the top of the knob. Use the Phillip's-head screwdriver to remove the knob and expose the stem assembly (figure A).

2. Have someone hold the supply line under the sink and use pliers to loosen the retaining nut. Wrap the jaws of the pliers with masking tape to guard against damaging the nut. Finish removing the nut by hand (figure B).

3. Use the pliers to pull the stem straight up and out of the assembly. Take the stem to the hardware store to find a replacement piece (figure C).

4. Now just reverse the process to replace the stem. Make sure so slide the rubber O-ring up into position before replacing the stem.

5. Insert the stem and push on the top. It should have a little spring to it, which means the O-ring's in the right position. Replace the retaining nut and knob and turn the water back on.

6. If the knob still turns past the off point, then the problem is probably a busted knob. Just remove the knob and go to the store for a replacement.
