Artist Melanie Royals demonstrates how to create a textured wallpaper effect on walls using a stencil, joint compound and tissue paper.
Materials:
stencil
joint compound
plastic spatula
repositionable spray adhesive
sanding block
tack cloth
white glue
roller brush
white tissue paper
latex paint
metallic glaze (can be metallic paint mixed with clear glaze)
Tips:
- Before you begin, determine the placement of the stencil on the wall and pencil in the registration marks. For this project, Royals used a border stencil vertically down the wall.
- It may be worthwhile to purchase two or more of the stencil to make the project go faster since you will need to skip an area to allow the other to dry.
- When applying the tissue paper, overlap each piece just slightly to prevent noticeable seams.
Steps:
- Secure the stencil to the wall with repositionable adhesive.
- Using the plastic spatula, gently spread a layer of the joint compound over the stencil (figure A). Remove the stencil and repeat steps 1 and 2 until the design is completed on each wall. Tip: Skip a space to allow the previous area to dry.
- After all of the stenciled designs are dry, sand the rough edges with a sanding block and wipe off the dust with a tack cloth.
- Prepare a one-to-one glue and water mixture. Using a small paint roller, apply the glue and water mixture to the wall in an area as large as the tissue. Crinkle a piece of tissue and open back up. Place the tissue over the glue and smooth out with your hands. Use the same roller over the tissue to remove any air bubbles and to seal the tissue to the wall (figure B). Repeat until the walls are covered.
- After the glue dries, apply two coats of grey latex paint and allow to dry.
- Apply metallic glaze to the wall in small sections, working the glaze into the crevices with a large stipple brush (figure C).
