Materials:
long level
extension pole
drop cloths
roller and 1/2" roller cover
latex flat base coat (ICI #145 Onionskin Tan)
latex semi-gloss top coat (Ralph Lauren Wexford Glenn #TH18B)
window squeegee
small paint comb
scissors
painter 's tape
sash brush
brush bucket
Steps:
- Mark-off the panels around the room (the featured ones were 36 inches wide). Pencil in the edge lines using a long level and tape-off every other panel. Cut the squeegee in a saw tooth pattern.
- Quickly cut-in the top and bottom of the panel first using a sash brush, and then immediately roll out the rest of the panel.
- Make straight horizontal passes with the squeegee, working down the panel. Overlap the passes to create a more organic, grassy look. Wipe the squeegee off as needed to make sure the swipes are clean. Use a small paint comb around tricky areas like switches and outlets.
- Remove the tape before the paint dries.
- After going around the room once (completing every other panel), fill in the alternate panels as long as the first ones are completely dry. If desired, offset the tape about 1/8 inch into the painted panels to create darker seam lines (figure A). This adds a little detail that helps delineate the panels, making it look more like a wall covering.
