Whisking and Wallpapering

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1204 -- More Projects »
In this fish bathroom, a whisking painting technique was added to the upper quarter of the walls, then the fish border and finally the background paper.

Materials:

painter's tape
latex satin paint for base coat
latex satin paint for top coat (SW#1204)
whiskbroom
wallpaper (David Carter Brown's "At Home by the Sea" collection - Wood Plank ADC7262) / border ("At Home by the Sea" collection - Today's Catch DC8223B)
wallpaper tray
wallpaper brush
sponge
straightedge
razor blades
lightweight rope

Steps:

  1. Start with the painting technique at the top to avoid ruining the wallpaper if there are any runs or spills. Determine where to place the border and make marks for the top and bottom, and then draw in level pencil lines. Tape-off for painting.

Figure A
  • Apply base coat and let dry. Roll on a vertical area (about two feet wide) of paint and pull a whiskbroom through it (figure A). Clean the bristles after a couple of swipes with paper towels. Continue working around the room in this fashion until it's covered.
  • While the paint is drying, install the background paper. Start with a level line for the first strip of paper. Cut out the lengths of paper needed before hanging, making sure that the pieces match.
  • Roll the first strip up (glue side out), immerse it in the tray and book it according to the directions. Put the paper up to and just over the bottom border guideline and right on the vertical level pencil line. Smooth the paper out with a wallpaper brush or damp sponge to remove all of the bubbles.
  • Cut the excess paper along the trim. Once satisfied, wipe off any excess glue with a damp sponge and move on to the next strip.
  • Once the glue has started to set up, roll the seam edges where two papers meet.

  • To add the border, follow the directions provided for soaking and booking, and then place it in the designated area. Once it's smooth and without bubbles, cut out the excess background paper from underneath. Line the straightedge up on the lower edge of the border and cut with a sharp razor blade (figure B).
  • When the length of the wall has been cut, pull up the border slightly and remove the excess background. Smooth the border back down and lightly roll the seam to ensure that the paper stays in place. Add seam adhesive to areas that won't stay down and apply pressure.

  • For a finishing touch, use hot glue to attach rope trim along the top and bottom border edges (figure C).
