Intricate patterns can be created on walls using masking tape and paint.
Shari Hiller likes to think of paint as a crayon box for adults, and she encourages experimentation with color and patterns. Following are three of her suggestions for adding interest to walls with a little paint:

  • Add texture to a wall by ragging on paint. Paint a base coat in latex paint. Use a semi-gloss paint in the same shade for the next step. Dip an old T-shirt in the paint and roll it on the wall in a random pattern.

  • Stripes add pizzazz to a room and can make a ceiling look higher. Painting them on is cheaper than wallpaper. Decide how wide the stripes will be, then tape off the wall at the correct intervals, putting the tape on the edges of the stripes that will remain the same color as the base coat. Fill in between the tape. For a shadow-stripe effect, use the same shade of paint for both stripes - one a matte finish, the other a semi-gloss finish.

  • Intricate patterns can be created on walls using masking tape and paint. Determine what the design will be and pencil it on the wall. Be sure to use a level. Tape in the design, pressing the tape down firmly so paint doesn't seep beneath it. Cut in and roll on the paint, working only one wall at a time so the tape can be pulled off without sticking. Stenciling can be added for a layered or trompe l'oeil effect.
