Faux Sandstone
Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-1053 -- More Projects »
Materials:
spray bottle
sandstone
6" drywall knife
natural marine sponge
4" Whizz roller and Whizz fab sleeve
Aquacreme
Aquacolor (Earth Green)
cotton rags
2" chip brushes
Steps:
- Roll a thin coat of sandstone material onto the entire surface with the four -inch roller to create a foundation. Skim off any high areas with the drywall knife and allow to dry completely. Scrape with blade again to remove any remaining peaks .
- Use a damp sponge to apply a random pattern of the sandstone over about 80 percent of the surface, leaving highs and lows. While wet, lightly knock off peaks as above.
- When the sandstone is about 80 percent dry, burnish the surface by pulling the drywall knife over it until it turns brown. This allows the sand to float to the surface and creates a multi-colored effect.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 around the room and allow to completely dry. If desired , add more sandstone in certain areas to enhance the pattern.
- Make a glaze by tinting Aquacreme with Earth Green. Fill spray bottle with water and lightly mist a small area. Use a chip brush to apply the mixture and blot the color with rags until satisfied. Repeat until finished.
