Matt Fox shares some tips for making painting easier and adding warmth to painted furniture:
- If painting over a previously textured paint technique, use sandpaper specifically made for sanding latex paint. It allows you to smooth it without going through a bunch of paper or having it gum up. To make the job even easier when working on a large area, put a piece on a pole sander. The extra reach and leverage of the pole can cut sanding time in half.
- Apply a primer coat if painting new drywall, walls with a lot of patching or walls with a lot of texture on them. It's best to use a primer tinted as close to the final color as possible. This allows better coverage when the color coat is rolled on and is less expensive than applying two or more coats of color.
- To darken painted furniture without repainting, apply a coat of stain over the existing paint. Wear gloves and wipe stain on with a foam brush (don't worry about drips). For a light look, wipe it off immediately. Let the stain sit for a little while before wiping it off with a rag for a darker surface. Once it's dry, apply a coat of urethane to protect the finish.
