Paint Types and Finishes

Decorating With Style : Episode DWS-635 -- More Projects »
Let's start with a tip for determining whether old paint is latex or oil based:

Dip a brush in the paint and then into water. If it is oil based, the water will bead up on the brush. If water based or latex, the paint will come off in the water.

There are five different levels of sheen (available in both latex and oil base):

  • High-gloss (shiniest, washable, durable and used to accent surfaces)
  • Semi-gloss (less shiny but still durable and washable)
  • Pearl/satin (has a bit of sheen, washable)
  • Eggshell (use if no shine is desired, washable, durable and good for us on imperfect walls)
  • Flat (commonly used, not very durable or washable unless the whole wall is wiped clean)

Tip: Remember that the shinier the paint finish, the more durable it will be.
