Different surfaces require different roller covers when painting. The more textured the surface, the thicker the roller cover should be.
Matt Fox explains how to choose the right roller cover for any painting job. The most textured surfaces need the thickest nap.
  • 1-1/4-inch nap: this thick nap is good for the roughest surfaces, such as concrete or exterior siding
  • one-inch nap: use on rough brick or a heavy knocked-down wall surface
  • 3/4-inch nap: light knocked-down wall surface
  • 1/4-inch nap: smooth surfaces with no texture, like Sheetrock
