Experiment with different colors and tools to achieve unique wall finishes.
Decorative painter Gary Lord uses some old painting tools to create modern looks.

Materials:

latex low-luster paint
Aquabond
Aquaglaze latex glazing liquid
rags
cheesecloth
stir stick
empty buckets
3" wide rollers
badger blender or softening brush
paint trays and liners
3" to 4" chip brushes

Steps for one- or two-color blend:
  1. Apply latex base paint or Aquabond to background.
  2. In an empty bucket, mix up 1 part latex base paint, and 2 parts Aquaglaze glazing liquid for each color used.
  3. Apply glazes with either a roller or chip brush in a random pattern, blending each color together a little on the surface while they are wet.
  4. Using cheesecloth, do a hit-skim patting motion with your hand and soften out the pattern, blurring edges together.
  5. This technique can also be use for a single color finish.

Steps for a softer look:

  1. Follow steps 1 through 5 above.
  2. Using a badger blender or softening brush soften the pattern even more with a very light-handed crisscross pattern over the entire surface.
