Benjamin Moore AquaPearl latex paint (#HC-80 , #HC-32, #HC-44, #HC-73)
artist acrylic paint (Raw Umber)
natural wool sea sponge/small cut piece of sponge
painter's tape
paint trays
straightedge

stencils (#GS-O101 Large Border Design and #GS-O103 Large Greek Key Design)
Steps:
1. Prime the board surfaces in an area with proper ventilation. Let dry for two to three days (throw the brush away instead of trying to clean it).
2. Base-coat the surfaces with #HC-80. Let dry overnight.
3. Measure and mark 12-inch-wide blocks. Mask-off alternating blocks.
4. Pour some #HC-32, #HC-44 and #HC-73 into the paint trays. Working on one block at a time, dip the damp sponge into #HC-73 and work it into the square in a random pattern. Without rinsing the sponge, pick up some #HC-44 and apply it. Repeat with #HC-32. Rinse sponge and let paint dry overnight.
5. Pull tape, mask-off the unpainted blocks, and repeat step 4. Once dry, paint thin grout lines with lightest color.
6. Put the first overlay of the large border design across the upper row of painted blocks. Pour each of the three stone colors into separate trays. Pour some of the #HC-73 into a fourth tray and add raw umber to darken it. Dampen the small sponge and work with two colors at a time over each of the overlays, starting from light to dark. For example, use the #HC-32 and #HC-44 for the first overlay, #HC-44 and #HC-73 for the second and #HC-73 and #HC-73/raw umber for the third. Rinse sponge .
7. Lay the Greek key pattern on the second from the bottom row of blocks. Use #HC -32 with #HC-44 for the top cutout of the first overlay and #HC-73/raw umber with #HC-73 for the bottom cutout. Let dry. Lay down the second overlay. Use #HC-44 with #HC-32 for the left hand cutout and #HC-73 with #HC-44 for the right hand cutout to create shadows. Rinse sponge.
8. Attach hinges.
