Figure A--This design treatment, even with the high cost of polyurethane, costs less than $100. The design will hold up with proper care and a new coat of polyurethane each year or so.

Figure B--In this large bedroom, it was decided early on to use area rugs to offset the colors of the various pieces of furniture. Before the rugs went in, however, sisal carpet was installed. A member of the Berber family, sisal is incredibly durable and nearly stain-proof, which explains its popularity. It also blends well, adding a clean, minimalist feel to the room.

Figure C--This is limestone tile. The larger-than-standard size of the squares is what makes this style unique and distinctive. The size can be hard to find, but it is worth the effort when you do find it.
