Sponged Cloud Ceiling

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1001 -- More Projects »
Materials:

satin finish paint (a lighter and darker shade of a color) (Teardrop #SW1941 and Casual Blue #SW1507)
natural sea sponge
paint tray/liner
bucket with water
painter's tape

Steps:
  1. Tape around ceiling trim and registers. Pull light fixtures down slightly.
  2. Starting with the darker of the two chosen colors, pour a small amount into a paint tray with liner. Dampen a natural sea sponge in water and wring out. Dab lightly into the paint (too much will create splotches instead of the desired lacy impressions).
  3. Randomly press the sponge to the ceiling in a 1' x 1' area to create a variety of imprints. Once the paint on the sponge starts to dry, fill in the area lightly to lessen the effect of the darker areas in the block.
  4. Around the trim can be difficult with a round sponge so look for a flat-sided one and press that into those spots for a professional finish.
  5. Every so often, step down off the ladder to see the overall effect and make any necessary adjustments. Are the impressions evenly spaced? Do you need to fill in any areas?
  6. Finish the entire ceiling in the same manner until satisfied.
  7. Make fewer impressions with the second color to fill in and lighten dark splotches. Step down and observe as before until complete.
