Freehand Ceiling Designs

Host Kathi Cardinalli welcomes decorative painter Jenny Bowman, who demonstrates techniques for creating freehand borders on walls and ceilings.

Materials:

No. 10 round-tip sable brush (These are expensive, but they are a great investment in the quality of your work.)
acrylic paints that complement the room's decor
test/practice paper
paper towels
pencil with eraser

Steps:

  1. Practice the design that has been chosen. Wallpaper or fabrics offer great ideas for patterns (figure A).

  2. Get familiar with the feel of painting on a vertical surface by practicing using the brush, loading the paint and applying it. Have a paper towel ready to catch any drips as you are painting on the wall (figure B).

  3. Mistakes can be incorporated into the design. Remember, perfection is not the goal here.

  4. Lightly draw the design in pencil, decide which colors to use, and begin to paint, one color at a time. Finish up all of the red design elements, then do all the blue elements, etc.

  5. To add accent dots or berries to the design, a pencil eraser dipped in paint is a perfect tool to use.
