Marble almost any porous surface using a modern application of the ancient art of Japanese marbling called Suminagashi.
Materials:

marbling dye kit
water-soluble surfaces such as natural fabrics (silk or cotton ), paper or wood items
water bin
newspaper
straw

Steps:

1. Fill bin with warm water and add marbling dyes as directed. Carefully blow across the surface with a straw to produce a marbled pattern.

2. Lay the fabric or paper on top of the water--it will immediately take on the dye pattern. Pull it out by the ends and place it on flat newspaper.Cover with another piece of newspaper and lightly pat it to absorb moisture. Let dry.

3. Use marbled items to cover frames, boxes and lampshades or make pillowcases , valances, etc.
