Customize place mats to suit any style or theme for your table. This retro design evokes a '70s look.
Materials:

pre-shaped place mats
acrylic paint for base coat (cream)
sponge roller
fine sandpaper
metallic acrylic paints (white, tan, rusty coral, leaf green, dark brown )
kitchen sponges
scissors
cardboard
foam paintbrush
round sponge daubers
spray matte varnish
plastic plates

Steps:

  1. Roll two coats of cream paint on each mat, allowing it to dry between layers . Sand lightly between coats and wipe clean.
  2. Cut sponges into geometric shapes (rectangle, square, triangle) and lightly dampen.
  3. Squeeze metallic paints (except brown) onto a plastic plate. Dip sponges and round daubers into colors and randomly create desired patterns on each mat. Let dry.
  4. Cut a piece of cardboard longer than the place mat. Apply brown paint along the ragged edge to make a loose grid pattern over the place mat. Let dry.
  5. Apply one or two coats of varnish for protection.
