Glass painter Barry Freestone shows how to make a stunning serving platter for the holiday season
(see photo at right).
Materials:
large glass plate
thick paintbrush
glass surface conditioner (to adhere paint)
poinsettia design (or any other design of choice)
tape
polyester-based gold outliner
polyester-based paints
fine paintbrush
Steps:
- Before you start, use a thick brush to coat the back of the glass plate with surface conditioner.
- Enlarge a template of your design and attach it to the front of the plate with tape.
- Working on the back, outline the design with gold outliner (figure A). Create a template for the rim and use a towel or pillow to push the template against the surface of the plate so that outlining is easier (figure B).
- Once the outlining is finished, apply paints with a fine paintbrush (in some instances, such as with outlining, you may apply paints straight from the bottle). Use one color at a time. For example, apply all red areas, then green areas, then white and so on (figure C).
