Figure D
Decorative painter Donna Dewberry demonstrates how to duplicate an existing pattern in a room onto fabric accessories by handpainting the motif.

Materials:

wax paper
tablecloth or other fabric
paintbrushes (Plaid One-Stroke was used on the show.)
acrylic paint (Plaid brand was used on the show.)
fabric medium (Plaid brand was used on the show.)

Steps:

  1. Put wax paper or a cloth underneath the tablecloth to protect the surface beneath from paint.

  2. Double-load a large paintbrush (1-inch or 3/4-inch size) by dipping it into two colors of paint, one on each side of the brush (figure A). For example, to paint the leaves, use green on one side and yellow or white on the other (figure B). Periodically dip the loaded brush in fabric medium as you paint.

  3. Water down green paint to paint curlicues on vines (figure C).

  4. Use a round paintbrush that is double-loaded with purple and white in a pouncing fashion to create wisteria blooms (figure D).

  5. After the paint is dry, iron the fabric to fuse the paint.
