Materials:
clear plate with embossed design
black latex enamel paint
paintbrush
acrylic size
silver and gold leaf
bristle or cosmetic brush
vinegar
plastic flowerpot or coffee can
Steps:
- Clean plate with vinegar and water solution.
- Paint the backside of the plate black, leaving the design clear (figure A). Once dry apply a second coat and allow to dry thoroughly.
- Place plate face down on flowerpot or coffee can with plastic lid (to prevent scratching). This allows the plate to be moved without touching the side being worked on. Cover all the tendrils with acrylic size. When tacky, add silver leafing. Use a bristle or cosmetic brush to tap the leaf into place.
- Cover entire back of plate with acrylic size. Allow to dry until tacky. Add gold leaf as above. Check for missed spots and reapply gold leaf if necessary.
