Materials:
air-propelled pens for fabric
pre-made napkins, table runner, tablecloth or fabric to make them
manila folders
repositionable adhesive
decorative punches , scissors
craft knife
stencils (optional)
iron
Steps:
- Create a stencil by coating the back of a manila folder with repositionable adhesive Use decorative punches, scissors or a craft knife to embellish stencils .
- Create a stencil by coating the back of a manila folder with repositionable adhesive.
- Adjust stencil placement on item(s) until satisfied (figure A). Mask-off any areas not to be painted.
- Using foot pump or lung power, blow color through and around stencils and mask shapes (figure B). Reposition stencils as needed to complete project.
- Heat-set with an iron.
Tips:
- The closer the pen is to the fabric, the more intense the color .
- Start at least one foot away from fabric for a soft airbrushed effect.
- Blend colors like paints (yellow and blue for green, blue and red for purple, etc.).
- Mute colors with a hint of brown or a complementary color (opposite on a color wheel).
- Air pens work well over subtle prints and textures, checks and other patterned fabric as well as solid colors.
- Cut stencils to match a china pattern, curtain fabric or other motif.
