There are some great specialty paints on the market to use for decorating projects :
  • Spray four to five light coats of mirror-like paint (allow it to dry for one minute between layers) onto the back of clear glass items such as plates and the inside of a vase so the glass has a shiny mirror-like finish (figure A).
  • For an aged effect with the mirror-like paint, dab some diluted black/brown paint or stain onto the back of a piece of glass along the edges/areas where an old mirror would have some spots. Let dry and then spray the mirror paint over it as above and frame as desired (figure B).
  • Milk paint (a combination of milk protein, quicklime and earth pigments) was used in colonial America and is extremely durable. For a distressed technique, use a paint scraping tool and/or a screwdriver to scratch/mar the wood. Apply a coat of milk paint over the unfinished item and sand where desired to expose the wood beneath once dry (figure C). Real, natural milk paint comes in a powder form (mix only as much as you need because it can only be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator overnight). Canned, pre-mixed milk paint colors are also available but are not the real milk paint recipe.
  • Colorful wood stains are a great choice for home accessories (figure D) . They're transparent, which allows the wood grain to show through, and come in many vibrant colors including glow-in-the dark stains. The stains are pre-mixed and can be combined to create customized colors.
