The Architectural Pool

Special Presentation : Episode SPS-S -- More Projects »
We start by looking at two different pools designed by award-winning architect and designer Ken Ronchetti. The architectural style integrates the home design with the pool design and uses the surrounding environment to tie all of the elements together.

The first pool is built on a narrow, bluff-side lot overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the shores of La Jolla, California (figure A). The whole pool complex is an intriguing maze of steps, decks and pools integrated into the design of the house (figure B).

Ronchetti has incorporated all of the homeowner's requests: a lap pool with a spur at each end (figure C), a weir and waterfall, a diving pool and an eye-shaped whirlpool (figure D)--all with a breath-taking view of the beach below.

The second pool is also located on a bluff in La Jolla, California. This home celebrates the sea with spectacular views and a multi-layered pool perfectly integrated into the geometry of the residence (figures E and F).

Ronchetti used his "trademark," inlaid glass panel walkways (figure G), to help bridge the design elements together. Waterfalls allow the water to run through narrow sandstone channels from the pool to the whirlpool (figure H ). Metal sculptures and lush landscaping inspired this backyard complex, making this home and its pool a true architectural masterpiece.
