Figure A
Host Pat Simpson explains how to build a unique planter-trellis for climbing roses that may also double as a privacy screen (figure A)!
Materials:

Tape measure
Pencil
Table saw
Miter saw
5/4" wood boards
Galvanized screws
Drill
Solid wood stain
Paint brush
Four, 2" x 2" boards
Dato bit
Clamp

Steps:

1. Measure and cut all the project components to the proper width and length.
2. Use a miter saw to cut six pieces of 5/4" board to 24 1/8". Use a circular saw if no miter saw is available.
3. Cut four pieces of 5/4" board to 11 1/8".

4. For the ends of the boxes, cut two 5/4" by 4" pieces to 11 1/8" (figure B).
5. Cut these two pieces on the tablesaw lengthwise to measure 1-3/4" wide.
6. Cut four corner blocks 1-1/2" wide by 12 3/8" long.
7. The bottom planter sections are two pieces, 4" by 22".
8. For the trellis frame, cut two 2" by 2" to 96" long and two, 2" by 2" to 24 1/8" long.
9. On all four 2" by 2", cut a 5/8" wide and 5/8" deep dato groove on the table saw (figure C).
10. Along the two longer 2" by 2", cut a lap joint 12 ¾" long by ¾" deep. This will be used to fasten the lattice panel to the planter.
11. Along the two shorter 2" by 2", create tendons on one end of the two pieces to fit inside the grooves for a stronger connection point.
12. Cut the lattice to 2' by 6' using the table saw. When cutting lattice, consider using an older or utility blade because chances are you will be cutting through metal staples.
13. If you are using the trellis-planter outside, be sure to assemble the pieces with galvanized screws.
14. Assemble the ends first, and attach the longer base planks with two screws each.
15. Lay the bottom two planks inside the planter.
16. Assemble the trellis, by placing the lattice on its side while attaching the long 2" by 2" pieces along the four sides.
17. Tap the grooves with a hammer to make sure the connection is snug. Fasten the corners with screws. Tip: You may want to use a bar clamp to compress the sections together as you work.
18. Stand the trellis in place, centered above the planter, and use screws to secure.
19. Coat the trellis with a solid coat stain to protect the wood from the outdoor elements.
