Installing a Shower Door

Fix It Up! : Episode FIX-503 -- More Projects »
Materials:

shower door kit
measuring tape
hacksaw
level
silicone caulk
masking tape
drill
1/8-inch drill bit

Steps:

1. Begin by measuring the length of the shower (where the doors will run). With a hacksaw, cut the track to that length minus 1/8-inch. The 1/8-inch is to compensate for the side rails, allowing them to fit properly.

2. Mark the location of the shower track and add silicone caulk. Place the track on the caulk and hold in place with masking tape while it dries (figure A).

3. Set the side rails on either side of the track after it is dry. Use a level to plumb and mark the installation holes on the side walls.

4. Using an 1/8-inch drill bit, pre-drill attachment holes (figure B), being careful not to crack the fiberglass. Replace the side rails on the walls and attach them with the supplied screws. The screws should come with door bumpers to keep metal from hitting metal (figure C).

5. Measure for the header track (that will run across the top of the doors), then use a hacksaw to cut that track to size. Place the header track over the side rails. Add silicone caulk along the side rails (figure D) and the lower track.

6. Add the rollers to the tops of the doors. Lift one door panel and hang the rollers to the inside rail of the top track. Lower the bottom edge into the bottom track and check alignment. Repeat with the second door (figure E), aligning it with the opposite side rail.

7. This project costs between 150 to 200 dollars and takes several hours to complete.
