Problem: Shower curtains can be a hassle to use and are often difficult to clean.

Solution: Shower doors are easy to install and clean and can dress up a bathroom.

Equipment list:
Tape measure
Level
Caulk gun with waterproof caulk
Hacksaw
Drill, bits and Philips head extension bit
Safety glasses

Dry-fit the shower doors

  1. Measure the inside area for the shower door and cut the door curb to size with the hacksaw.
    * Be sure to wear safety goggles when sawing or drilling.
    * The curb has weep holes on one side for draining. Be sure these face the inside of the shower.
  2. Center the curb on the bathtub sill, and secure it with tape (figure A).
  3. Snap the jambs into place, and use a level to check for plumb (figure B).
  4. Mark the holes for mounting the jamb, and mark along both sides of the curb.

Mount the door frame

  1. Remove the curb and jambs.
  2. Drill the mounting holes using a 3/16" drill bit (figure C). You may need a tile-cutting bit for tile walls.
  3. Tap plastic wall anchors into place and wipe any dust from the work surface.
  4. Apply caulk inside the lines for the curb (figure D), and set the curb in place (figure E).
  5. Set the jambs into place and secure them to the wall with screws.
  6. Place setting blocks inside the curb with the curved ends facing down.
  7. Place the glass panel in place on the setting blocks, with the smooth glass facing in toward the shower (figure F).
  8. Set the channeled jamb piece in place next to the glass panel.
  9. Snap the doorstop pieces into place on both sides of the door.
  10. Set the header in position but do not screw it in place.

Install the door

  1. Snap the rails into the curb and header, making sure they are centered between the jambs.
  2. Pull the bottom end of the pivot jamb tight against the curb filler and check for plumb.
  3. Set the door pivot bushings into place in the pivot holes (figure G) .
  4. Attach the pivot pins to the top and bottom of the door.
  5. Place a nylon spacer on the bottom pin and a safety washer on the top pin.
  6. Set the bottom pin into place (figure H), lift the header (figure I), align the door, and set the header in place on the top door pin.
  7. Screw into place (figure J).
  8. Caulk the corners where the jamb meets the wall and where the curb meets the sill.
