Problem: Shower curtains can be a hassle to use and are often difficult to clean.
Solution: Shower doors are easy to install and clean and can dress up a bathroom.
Equipment list:
Tape measure
Level
Caulk gun with waterproof caulk
Hacksaw
Drill, bits and Philips head extension bit
Safety glasses
Dry-fit the shower doors
- Measure the inside area for the shower door and cut the door curb to size with the hacksaw.
* Be sure to wear safety goggles when sawing or drilling.
* The curb has weep holes on one side for draining. Be sure these face the inside of the shower. - Center the curb on the bathtub sill, and secure it with tape (figure A).
- Snap the jambs into place, and use a level to check for plumb (figure B).
- Mark the holes for mounting the jamb, and mark along both sides of the curb.
Mount the door frame
- Remove the curb and jambs.
- Drill the mounting holes using a 3/16" drill bit (figure C). You may need a tile-cutting bit for tile walls.
- Tap plastic wall anchors into place and wipe any dust from the work surface.
- Apply caulk inside the lines for the curb (figure D), and set the curb in place (figure E).
- Set the jambs into place and secure them to the wall with screws.
- Place setting blocks inside the curb with the curved ends facing down.
- Place the glass panel in place on the setting blocks, with the smooth glass facing in toward the shower (figure F).
- Set the channeled jamb piece in place next to the glass panel.
- Snap the doorstop pieces into place on both sides of the door.
- Set the header in position but do not screw it in place.
Install the door
- Snap the rails into the curb and header, making sure they are centered between the jambs.
- Pull the bottom end of the pivot jamb tight against the curb filler and check for plumb.
- Set the door pivot bushings into place in the pivot holes (figure G) .
- Attach the pivot pins to the top and bottom of the door.
- Place a nylon spacer on the bottom pin and a safety washer on the top pin.
- Set the bottom pin into place (figure H), lift the header (figure I), align the door, and set the header in place on the top door pin.
- Screw into place (figure J).
- Caulk the corners where the jamb meets the wall and where the curb meets the sill.
