If you're upgrading your bathroom, you may want to install a new toilet, or more accurately termed, a water closet. New toilets come in a variety of styles, use very little water and are easy to install.

Equipment list:
Adjustable wrenches
A flat-head screwdriver
Two pairs of slip-joint pliers (one large and one small, if possible)
Toilet bolts to hold toilet to flange (can be purchased separately if not provided with toilet)
Flexible toilet supply tube
A wax seal (deep seat or standard)

* Most states require that both new and replacement water toilets use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush.

* Before you purchase a toilet, measure the distance between the wall and the center of the drain. Most toilets require a 12" space; however, some require a 10" space and some a 14" space.

* If you're completely remodeling your bathroom, keep in mind that it's easier to install flooring before you install the toilet.

Install the escutcheon plate and valve

1. Slide the escutcheon plate over the water pipe.

2. Slide the compression nut of the valve over the water pipe, with the threads facing you. Then slide the ferule over the pipe.

3. Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the valve and hand-tighten it into place. Use a wrench to hold the valve steady, and use another wrench to finish tightening the nut (figure A).

Install the toilet bolts and wax seal

* Your new toilet may already have the tank attached to the bowl. If not, you might want to attach the bowl to the floor before you attach the tank; that way you won't have as much weight to deal with.

1. Place the new toilet bolts in the flange with the bolts pointing up.

2. Place a wax seal on the underside of the toilet.

3. Slide the bowl over the bolts, and twist it to seat the wax seal. You may want to sit on the toilet to help seat the wax seal.

4. Place the plastic cap retainers and washers over the bolts, then tighten nuts over the bolts to hold the bowl in place. Place the plastic caps over the bolts after you've finished tightening.

Attach the tank to the bowl

1. Set the tank seal in place.

2. Place the tank on the bowl.

3. Drop the tank bolts through the appropriate holes.

4. Tighten the bolts until the tank doesn't wobble. Be sure not to overtighten the bolts -- you could crack the porcelain. If you're working alone, attach the bowl to the floor before installing the tank.

5. Connect the toilet supply tube to the tank.

6. Attach the seat using the seat bolts provided.
