Polishing a Kitchen Sink

Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to polish away scratches in her solid composite sink (figure A). On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a two.

Tools:

towels
safety glasses
five grades of sandpaper (ranging from 220 to 600-grit)
solid surface cleanser and polisher

Steps:

Note: Before sanding a sink, check with the manufacturer to make sure sanding will not damage the sink.

1. Put on the safety glasses and get ready to sand, starting with the 220-grit paper. Fold the sandpaper sheet into thirds (figure B), so that when one side gets clogged you can easily switch to a fresh area.

2. Sand with random motions (figure C) to avoid creating patterns. Clean the paper by running it under water occasionally.

3. Switch to the next grade of sandpaper and repeat the process. Continue until you work your way through the 600-grit paper.

4. Rub some polish into the sink and let it dry for about 10 minutes, then come back and buff with a clean dry towel.
