Home repair expert Henry Harrison shows how to steady a kitchen sink that's loose in its mountings by using washers, wing nuts and silicone caulk. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one.

Steps:

1. Begin by using an adjustable wrench to gauge the size of the sink bolt. Raise the sink enough to get the wrench on the shaft of the bolt, and close it against the bolt (figure A). Then use a ruler to measure the gap and get a pretty good idea of what size wing nuts and washers you need.

2. Have a friend hold the sink in position while you crawl underneath and attach the washers and bolts. Make sure the wide washers are large enough to grip the underside of the counter (figure B). Tighten washers and wing nuts on all the bolts.

3. For the final step, apply a bead of silicone caulk around the top edge of the sink (figure C). Make sure to use a high-grade, non-toxic silicone caulk that 's meant to be used in kitchens and baths. Use clear caulk and the seam will be barely visible.
