Steps: 1. Cut the shelving pieces to size and lay out all the pieces. Since the pieces will be joined by biscuits rather than nails, match up all the pieces and mark where the biscuit grooves will be placed prior to cutting. This is to assure accuracy and a tight fit once assembled.
2. Make two centered grooves at the end of each horizontal shelf piece using the biscuit joiner. Next, match up the grooves and make equal cuts down the face of the shelf sides. The first groove for the shelf sides should be measured a 3/8-inch from the top, allowing the 3/4-inch shelf piece to sit flush. Then measure 8-5/16 of an inch below that for the next grooves, continuing until reaching the bottom of the 34-inch sides (figure A).
3. Take the router and make 1/4-inch grooves along the backside edge of the top, bottom and two sides pieces. This is where the backing will be placed once the shelf is put together (figure B).
5. Take the biscuits and dry-fit them before gluing to make sure everything fits (figure C). Tip: Because the biscuits are made from compressed beech wood, they are designed to absorb moisture and swell up, so store them in an airtight container until ready for use to make sure they stay dry.
6. Add glue to both grooves, then insert the biscuits and fit the shelf pieces together. Using water-based glue will allow the compressed biscuits to swell (figure D).
7. With the back facing up, use clamps to hold the shelf together.
8. Glue the back edges of the shelf and slide the 1/4-inch backing into the grooves made in step #3. Attach using 1/2-inch brads (figure E).
