Install a GFCI Outlet

Room by Room : Episode RXR-1011 -- More Projects »
GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupters) must be installed in all new construction near water (along countertops within six feet of a sink in kitchens and baths, as well as in unfinished basements and garages). It's not a bad idea to replace them in older homes, as well.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the power to the outlet and remove the plate and two screws holding the outlet. Unscrew the wires connecting the outlet to the power and remove it.
  2. Follow the instructions on the GFCI, paying attention to the correct procedure for your project (whether one or two cables are entering the box).
  3. Fold the wires into the box, keeping the grounding wire away from the white and hot terminals. Screw the receptacle to the box and attach the faceplate.
