Deborah Burnett, ASID, shares tips for keeping appliances, cabinetry and lock sets looking good for years:
- When in a store, ask how an item is supposed to be cleaned before purchasing it .
- If there is a lacquer finish on your kitchen cabinets, do not use water to clean them. Wipe them with furniture polish every few days to remove dust and dirt.
- A polyurethane finish on cabinets is more durable, but takes longer to dry when being made. Two or three times a year, spray furniture polish directly on the surface and let it sit for a minute or so. Wipe it off with a rag in a circular motion to fill in any scratches.
- Use an ostrich feather duster to attract dust. Shake it outside when done to remove the dirt.
- Clean a powder-coated finish on a cabinet or mixer with warm water. This is okay because of the high durability of the pigments used to make the coating.
- Seal the surface of a rusty enamel item with liquid car polish. Use the same product on powder-coated rust-finish items that are outside, as acid rain will cause them to collect dirt.
- Use a vegetable brush and mildly-abrasive pad to remove years of wear and tear on a solid brass lock set that is tarnished. Then rub a mixture of salt and lemon juice on it to bring back the color. Apply a lacquer finish for protection.
