Nothing finishes off a cabinet, drawer or door like the perfect knob or handle and never before has so much attention has been paid to what was once an afterthought. Today's knobs and pulls are bejeweled, bedazzling and they're being designed for use in every room of the house. - They come in all shapes, sizes and color choices. It's the final touch to a piece of furniture--almost like jewelry is to an outfit. They're what the eye sees when you look at a piece.
- Knobs can completely update or change the look of any cabinet or door for a fraction of what it would cost to replace the piece. Instead of installing new kitchen cabinets, try changing the knobs for a whole new look.
Pulls can be used to express a passion for just about anything from pets to flowers. A popular look right now is a birdcage style, which is forged and twisted iron (figure A). There's also demand for stainless steel and satin nickel pulls that match the new stainless steel appliances in kitchens and baths.
There's eclectic hardware and some that looks like jewelry (figure B). Each of these knobs is crafted by hand by a former jewelry designer, and then painted in exquisite jewel tones. Austrian crystals are used to add even more luster.
When it comes to knobs and pulls today, anything goes. All you need is a little imagination and enterprise. Try putting faucet handles on a small set of drawers or glue seashells, buttons or a favorite framed baby photo to small inch-thick wooden dowels, which allows you to screw them in from the back (figure C).
