Interior designer Denise Simons shows a quick and easy way to give old cabinets a new look.
Figure A--Replacing cabinets can be expensive. A makeover, on the other hand, can be fun and produce more customized results. Transforming brown cabinets--which seem to be in every kitchen in America--to white can change the whole personality of the room. Always sand before painting, then add a taupe base coat. A crackle medium in both the center and border comes next. Finish with a glaze in tan, then butter, then taupe.
Figure B--Wooden backplates come in different colors and sizes. Center a backplate on the cabinet, then add a functional knob. The dark backplate on a light cabinet adds appealing flair.
Figure C--Paint cabinets black. Use sandpaper to sand the edges both on the trim and the center panel. Seal with a polyurethane sealer. Select a distinctive knob such as this fish one for either the center or corner.
Figure D--A blue-green glaze, along with taupe and teal, highlights this cabinet. Subtle splatter painting finishes the look. Again, a dark backplate and glass knob give this cabinet distinction without being flashy.
