Repair Laminate Counter

Home repair expert Henry Harrison has a solution for a piece of laminate countertop that just won't stay in place. He shows how to remove and replace the laminate so that it will stay in place for good. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job an easy one.

Tools:

2x4
orbital sander
sandpaper
putty knife
adhesive cement
safety glasses
dust mask
rubber gloves

Steps:

1. Use a putty knife to carefully pry off the loose strip of laminate (figure A).

2. Wearing safety glasses and a dust mask, use an orbital sander and sandpaper to sand the old glue off of the counter.

3. Place the strip of laminate on the 2x4 and sand the glue off of it with the sander.

4. Wipe the strip and counter with a rag to remove any dust.

5. Wearing rubber gloves, apply a coat of adhesive cement to the strip and the counter, being careful not to overwork the cement (figure B).

6. Once the sections are tacky, line them up and press the strip(s) back into place (figure C).
