Host Cindy Piccoli shows how to give a plain cabinet an antique feel using newspaper , matte medium and acrylic paint.
Materials:
small cabinet
newspaper (enough to cover cabinet)
acrylic paint (off-white, yellow and gold)
sandpaper
Mod Podge
paintbrushes
Steps:
- Remove any knobs and sand the cabinet thoroughly to prepare the surface.
- Tear newspaper into strips or pieces, depending on preference.
- Apply a coat of Mod Podge matte medium to one side of the cabinet and apply pieces of newspaper to entire side, overlapping the edges. Continue this technique over the other sides, leaving the top bare.
- Brush an additional coat of matte medium over the entire cabinet, with the exception of the top. Be sure to pay special attention to any areas where the paper may be curling or peeling. Use a finger and matte medium to secure those spots. Allow to dry completely.
- Apply a light coat of thinned-down off-white paint to the entire surface, except the top. Allow to dry.
- Apply a coat of thinned-down gold to entire surface, except the top. Allow to dry .
- Using a foam brush, give the top a coat of slightly thicker gold paint, creating a mottled effect.
- Use sandpaper to lightly distress small areas of the cabinet.
- Reattach hardware.
