Jodi and Pat install their new countertop. They have chosen a laminate countertop to install. They cover cutting out for the stove and installing a new dishwasher .

Remove the existing countertop
- Shut off power at the breaker box for any electrical appliances under the countertop . Then shut off the water supply at the valves under the countertop.
- Disconnect the hot and cold water supply lines and disconnect the drain lines .
- Disconnect the clamps holding the sink in place, and lift the sink out of the countertop.
- Disconnect and remove any other appliances beneath the countertop such as dishwashers and trash compactors.
- Disconnect the screws holding the countertop in place. You may need to remove some drawers to reach the screws.
- Score the bead of caulk between the countertop and the wall, and then lift the countertop off the cabinets.
Replace the countertop
- You can have your countertop custom-made, or you can select a stock countertop from a home improvement center. In either case, many color and pattern combinations are available.
- Measure the distance of the cabinet run to determine the measurements for your new countertop. Be sure to add an inch or two for overhang.
- Use a framing square to mark the bottom side of the countertop at the appropriate length.
- Place masking tape on the top of the countertop along the area to be cut. This will help keep the laminate from chipping.
- Clamp a straight edge to the underside of the countertop to use as a guide for your circular saw. Be sure the straight edge is offset enough to allow room for the base of your saw.
- Using a laminate blade in your circular saw, cut the countertop to length.
- Attach an end cap to the edge of the countertop.
* Attach the filler strip (included in the kit) to the edge, using wood glue and nails. Be sure the nails aren 't long enough to poke through the laminate surface.
* Apply the end cap to the edge. Use a heat gun or an iron to activate the adhesive backing.
* Sand any rough edges. - Pre-drill through the corner brackets and secure the countertop to the cabinets with screws.
- Use a framing square to mark the placement of the sink.
- Drill holes in the four corners, then use a jigsaw to connect the corners. Place masking tape on the base of the jigsaw to prevent scratching the laminate surface .
- sink in place and reconnect the clamps. Connect the waterRun a bead of caulk around the perimeter of the sink rim, set the supply and drains, and connect any other appliances.
- Run a bead of caulk where the backsplash meets the wall.
- Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker box.
