Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows how to quickly and easily re-align kitchen cabinet doors that have adjustable European-style cup hinges (figure A). On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison says this is definitely a one.

Tools

Flat-edged rule
Screwdriver
File
Screws

Directions

Remove the hinges from the cabinet doors and frames. Replace any missing screws. Just take the hinge to the hardware store and find screws that fit.

Some cup hinges have grooves where the two pieces meet. If the grooves appear to be worn, give the hinge a little "tune-up" by deepening the grooves with the file (figure B).

Reattach the hinge pieces to the cabinet frame, but leave it a little loose to make final adjustments.

Reattach hinge piece to door and then to frame hinge piece (figure C). Again, leave things a little loose so you can make final adjustments.

Use the ruler to make sure the doors fit evenly (figure D). If they do not, then go back in and make up-and-down adjustments. Tighten all screws when the door fits to your satisfaction.
