Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to build false fronts for kitchen drawers. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a three.

Tools:

portable work bench
sawhorses
circular saw
straight edge
router
pencil
small power sander
tape measure
power drill
clamps
putty knife
paint brush
sandpaper
screwdriver
safety glasses
dust mask

Steps:

1. Remove the hinges from the cabinet door. Pull out the drawers and number them.

2. Measure the drawers and cut out the drawer fronts (figure A). Sand the surface of the drawer fronts so they are rough and ready to accept the glue (figure B).

3. Apply a liberal amount of wood glue to the drawer front and spread it out with a paintbrush.

4. Line up the drawer and sit it facedown on top of the false front. Secure to the workbench with clamps (figure C).

5. Further secure the front with one-inch wood screws after drilling pilot holes. Set the screws using a countersink attachment. The screws should go through the original drawer front and into the false fronts, but not all the way through the false fronts (figure D).

6. Use a router to trim the edges of the false front. Sand the edges and install the drawers (figure E).
