Help Around the House host Henry Harrison shows a guest how to mount magnetic clips that will help keep cabinet doors firmly shut (figure A). On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this chore a one.

Tools:

magnetic cabinet clips with screws
Phillip's-head screwdriver
carpenter's pencil
power drill with bits
safety glasses

Steps:

1. Mark the center of the existing latch on each door and then remove the screws holding the latch to door.

2. Position the plate for the new magnetic latches.

3. Mark the screw holes through the plate onto the doors and then drill pilot holes. Be sure to wear safety glasses while drilling.

4. Then insert the screws, securing the plate to the door (figure B).

5. Remove the latch on the cabinet frame using a screwdriver. If the new magnetic latch will not fit on the vertical frame of the cabinet, try mounting it to the underside of a shelf (figure C).

6. Magnetic clips can also be mounted at the top center of the door (figure D). Just make sure the metal plate mounted on the door comes into contact with the magnetic clip mounted on the cabinet frame when the door is closed.
