Building simple shelves that complement this armoire balances it out and creates space for accessories.

Materials:

2" x 6" rough sawn cedar
block planer
leather gloves
metal straps (3 straps per 4' length)
screws
router
decorative brackets

Steps:

  1. Wear gloves and round the shelf edges and ends with planer to soften them enough to be used safely.
  2. Since the boards are narrow, attach two together with metal straps. If desired, hide them underneath by making a template for the router, and then make a groove for each strap (figure A). This isn't necessary if a router isn't available. Screw the straps in place to secure the wood.
  3. Attach to brackets and hang.
