Steps:

  1. Remove everything from your the cabinets.
  2. Using a 2x4 on top of a car jack, build a support under the base of the cabinet and lift it until the jack and not the screws in the wall support the weight of the cabinet (figure A).
  3. Remove the screws from the cross member (figure B) holding the cabinet in place and move the cabinet to the ground.
  4. Locate the wall studs and mark them on the walls. Transfer these marks to the backs of the cabinets and drill pilot holes. Be sure to wear safety glasses while drilling.
  5. With the cabinet in place supported by the jack and a helper to steady it, drill through those pilot holes inside the cabinet all the way through to the wall studs. If you don't have enough studs, or if they aren't placed where you need them, you 'll have to use butterfly bolts (figure C) for a better hold.
  6. Reposition the cabinet on the wall using the jack for support. Use a carpenter's level to make sure that it's plumb.
  7. Once it's level, secure the screws into the studs through the holes you've pre-drilled.
