Materials:

3/4" plywood
1/4" plywood
ruler
handsaw
finishing nails
hammer
wood glue
drill
screws - appropriate for the wall where the shelves will hang
two wood screws
screwdriver
paintbrush
paint
level
T-square
pencil

Steps:
  1. Determine the size of desired box, and the wood required to fit these dimensions. Use the sample size below.
  2. For a 10"-wide by 4"-high by 5"-deep box, use the following sizes:

    3/4" plywood:

For the top and bottom: two pieces 10" x 4-3/4"

For the sides: two pieces 5" x 3-1/2"

For the mounting bracket: one piece 8-1/2" x 2"

    1/4" plywood:

For the front: one piece 10" x 5"

  3. After cutting the pieces to size, glue and nail the top and bottom pieces to the side pieces, setting the side pieces on the inside of the top and bottom pieces. Glue and nail the front piece to the sides and the top and bottom, covering all the edges. Drill two holes in the top piece approximately 3/8" from the back edge and 3" in from both sides.
  4. Drill two holes in the mounting bracket, centered and 2" from the short sides. This will be for the screws that will hold the bracket to the wall. Using the level, find the position on the wall for the shelf and mark.
  5. Screw the mounting bracket to the wall using the proper screws for the wall type.
  6. Paint the shelf the desired color. If using solid wood, stain will be just as effective as paint.
  7. Slip the box shelf over the mounting bracket, and screw from the top right into the mounting bracket.
Tips:
  • When combining various sizes on a wall, it's best to keep them all the same depth.
  • Plywood is inexpensive and easy to cover with a few coats of paint.
